life as a freelancer

What happens when an artist who never dreamed of owning a business suddenly finds herself doing just that?


Music was my passion, and I was going to pursue a life of art. It sounds really glamorous doesn't it? Except glamour doesn't really buy food or pay rent. And when people from my past life began to contact me about freelancing I was hesitant. Would saying "yes" to this be the same as telling the universe I wasn't serious about building a singing career? Was it possible to do both?


So I decided I was going to begin an experiment.


And I decided that I would give the universe options and it could decide what my life would be. I would put all my energy into building both a career in performance and a freelance social media career and see which one took.

I knew I could not going on making tens of dollars forever. I prefer to be self-sufficient and I had to find a way to support my life while creating art at the same time. But I so wanted to have a life committed to music.


At this point in my life, I'd just finished reading a book that would change the way I thought about life, the universe {or god -- whatever you want to call it}, and the power we all possess. And I decided that I would give the universe options and it could decide what my life would be. I would put all my energy into building both a career in performance and a freelance social media career and see which one took. Whichever one grew, THAT is what I'd do.


And they both grew.


My singing was really starting to take off -- that year alone I sang with three new companies and worked for about nine months of the year. At the same time, it wasn't long before I had a roster full of social media clients. So much so that I was able to move back to North Carolina and get my own little apartment.


I wasn't really sure, though, why the universe didn't understand what I was asking for. I had clearly said that whichever grew I would put my energy into
